lyrics

Here in the old street the café is closed
where we used to meet not so long ago
The record shop’s empty, no one wants to buy vintage vinyl these days
I heard he sold up and flew out to Cuba and that’s where he stayed

Is it because it’s so bitter this winter everyone’s off to the sun?
Is it because we’re growing older and there’s things that we’ve never done?
I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold
And how everything changes

My parents have lived here since I was a girl
They’re selling the house to go round the world
And Grandmother sits in a room in a chair. She just sits and stares.
I hope the one thing that she still remembers is somebody cares

She says if you ask me it’s bitter this winter and life’s not what it used to be
I think that she knows that the curtains are closed now and all that still glows is her colour TV
I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold
And how everything changes

When my world was turning itself upside down I would cling to a few small things
Those days are over and life’s pretty good now - I’ve got no cause to complain
Except that I thought one or two things might stay the same

Here in the old street the café is closed
where we used to meet not so long ago
And the place where we spent all those special occasions is run by somebody new
I don’t think they’d know us if we were to go back, and anyway what good would it do?

Is it because it’s so bitter this winter everyone’s off to the sun?
Is it because we’re growing older and time keeps ticking on?
I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold
And how everything changes
