I travelled to a country I’d never been before The sweet intoxication led me to an open door It weakened my defences: the sights, the smell, the taste Like a rocket to my senses leaving me feeling out of place I wish I knew where home was I wish I knew the way I wish I knew where home was He was like no other lover and courted easily There were worlds to be discovered as long as he was free And so we made our Eden as if it was for real But the apple stayed uneaten – that was the deal I wish I knew where home was I wish I knew the way I wish I knew where home was Still I long for all the comforts that I have known The ones that fit me like a glove But I cannot find my way back home I’m a stranger, a stranger in love The drummers keep on drumming (I wish I knew where home was) And the tunes weave on through the night (I wish I knew the way) The garden looks most lovely by the fairy lantern light The wind blows around my shoulders, I go searching for a chair I can’t remember leaving but I am no longer there © Jennifer Crook 2008

I can almost feel your arms around me I have to admit you’ve found me lonely without love There are people who still think I’m crazy Falling for you, well maybe, but I can’t get enough Your jacket hanging on my bedroom door Has the smell of you that I’m longing for A photograph and a few short lines But nothing compares to the way your eyes burn through mine, through mine And if dreams are woven in the fabric of our lives And if wishes still get granted and honesty survives Like the pennies we toss in the wishing well If this love is meant to last then only time Time will tell Words of jealousy can be so cruel Didn’t they know, I’m nobody’s fool And as for promises when we’re apart All I ask of you is take good care of my heart, my heart © Jennifer Crook 2008

There’s a bike in the backyard nobody’s ridden for years all it needed was a pair of new tyres some oil would free up the gears look at the state of the garden brambles and weeds everywhere my heart is like that untended garden and a bicycle in need of repair as for the poem I started somehow I ran out of words like the music I left on the piano or a song that’s never been heard like the shelves in the kitchen still waiting to be put upon the wall my heart is like a telephone ringing but nobody’s taking the call and on a bright summer’s morning before I wonder outside the clouds have darkened and gathered and the sun’s just a crack in the sky and then I look at the garden brambles and weeds everywhere my heart is like that untended garden and a bicycle in need of repair © Jennifer Crook 2008

Jane 04:44
My friend Jane, she doesn’t worry she says it’ll all work out just fine some day my friend Jane, she doesn’t hurry there’s plenty of time if we use it right she’d say she sings in the bath and when she runs out of money she’ll be dancing all night long to a rock’n’roll band he laughs like a child, and isn’t it funny how life just seems to hold her in it’s hand? what if we all looked for the rainbow instead of the coming rain? what if we all could catch the starlight instead of the morning train? what if are hearts could be as open as a ship out on the sea? and if we lived the way that Jane does what kind of world would this be? my friend Jane is usually smiling but when she cries the whole world falls apart it’s a magical thing, no use defiling ‘cos nothing will ever drain it from her heart and there was a time I seem remember when we’d ride on through the night with our hearts so free we were living on hope and the will to surrender and we thought it was the way we’d always be what if we all looked for the rainbow... I was thinking about planting some flowers I was thinking how I really want to travel the world I was thinking I could love you for hours and hours and run out and play just like a little girl what if we all looked for the rainbow... © Jennifer Crook 2008

Soon Enough 05:34
Take a ride with me on the big wheel And when we’re falling through the sky, tell me, how does it feel? Catch the wind with me as we go round 'Cos soon enough we’ll be back with both feet on the ground Fly a kite with me up in the air And when it pulls us away from earth don’t be scared It might take us somewhere heaven bound 'Cos soon enough we’ll be back with both feet on the ground Travelling lightly we rise like a balloon And if it takes us too high don’t let me down too soon Sail a boat with me way downstream And when the mist turns to gold, tell me, is it a dream Let it float somewhere we’ll never be found 'Cos soon enough we’ll be back with both feet on the ground And if we fall you can be sure you won’t hear a sound 'Cos soon enough we’ll be back with both feet on the ground © Jennifer Crook 2008

I don’t mind the rain when it falls upon me I don’t mind the icy sun in a winter sky I don’t mind the waves crashing on me I don’t mind the salty taste of the tears you cry I don’t mind this cold wind if it keeps me singing Every road has its twists and its turns Every goodbye spoken is a new beginning Where love songs comfort and a slow flame burns And a little sip is as much as most get from any goblet of delight Well I have tasted nowhere near enough yet But days like these whisper that I might For I’ve had my fill of this cup of sorrow And the nights when the dark shadows fall And it’s slowly dawning that come tomorrow We will see some kind of beauty in it all A bitter wind still carries laughter And shivers slowly melt into a smile And if it sounds too much like happy ever after Maybe it will be for a little while I don’t mind the darkness if it draws you to me The moon always lights up the way And the sun it rises without warning Like a rose in morning on a heartbreak day © Jennifer Crook 2008

Here in the old street the café is closed where we used to meet not so long ago The record shop’s empty, no one wants to buy vintage vinyl these days I heard he sold up and flew out to Cuba and that’s where he stayed Is it because it’s so bitter this winter everyone’s off to the sun? Is it because we’re growing older and there’s things that we’ve never done? I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold And how everything changes My parents have lived here since I was a girl They’re selling the house to go round the world And Grandmother sits in a room in a chair. She just sits and stares. I hope the one thing that she still remembers is somebody cares She says if you ask me it’s bitter this winter and life’s not what it used to be I think that she knows that the curtains are closed now and all that still glows is her colour TV I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold And how everything changes When my world was turning itself upside down I would cling to a few small things Those days are over and life’s pretty good now - I’ve got no cause to complain Except that I thought one or two things might stay the same Here in the old street the café is closed where we used to meet not so long ago And the place where we spent all those special occasions is run by somebody new I don’t think they’d know us if we were to go back, and anyway what good would it do? Is it because it’s so bitter this winter everyone’s off to the sun? Is it because we’re growing older and time keeps ticking on? I’m no longer surprised when friends become strangers and I’m getting used to the cold And how everything changes © Jennifer Crook 2008

Penny 04:02
A penny for the one I love A penny for the friends I’ve made A penny for the town where I was born A penny for the songs we’ve played The power of a stormy sea The promise of the morning sky All adds up to the kind of stuff Money can never buy A penny for a walk alone A penny for a tender touch A penny for a place to call my own When the world gets too much Another day to start again Another chance to roll the dice All adds up to the kind of stuff I wouldn’t sell at any price See a penny pick it up One for courage, two for luck A few to save for rainy days and keep the lonliness at bay A penny for your thoughts A penny for your dreams Put them in your pocket til you know what each one means Counting all the love I’ve lost And every little bit I’ve found All adds up to the kind of stuff You know it makes the world go round A penny for the one I love… © Jennifer Crook 2008

Broken dreams for sale, I don’t need them anymore Guaranteed to fail and leave you worse off than before Broken dreams for free, they’re no good to me They take up all the empty space where something new could be How long must I go on paying the price for failing to learn Not to give my heart away without the promise of return Broken heart for rent, someone heaven -sent To occupy the vacancy and take the place where love should be ‘cos “Broken hearts’r’us”, a name that you can trust Sure to turn your precious love to hopelessness and dust It seemed as good a time as any to do a spot of spring-cleaning Choices are so hard, so many, I want the one that has some meaning For someone who Is sorting through Broken dreams for sale, at a price that’s far too high Guaranteed to fail no matter how you try Broken dreams for free, though they dearly cost me Take the lot and I’ll see what tomorrows’ dreams will be © Jennifer Crook 2008

A suitcase bound for anywhere, a broken rendezvous Laden full of promises like a table set for two We never flew to Africa or caught the boat to Spain When I ask you why You reply Too much rain, there was too much rain, too much rain A faded photograph, a rollercoaster ride We did the best we could to swim against the tide You kiss my forehead just before you board your train And though the sun is in the sky we’re still clouded by When we started on this road you know we couldn’t see it fail Except for an act of God upon some grand and tragic scale But it comes down in the end to living every day And the things that come between us are the things we do and say © Jennifer Crook 2008
